Why is US Privacy Law so important?

This year California, Connecticut, Colorado and Virginia all signed their own privacy laws that determine how their state protects individuals’ personal information. Nevada already introduced a privacy law and Utah will have theirs introduced at the end of this year.

New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Montana and Tennessee have signed up to have their own privacy bills but are not yet required by law. It looks likely that Texas will be the next state to introduce a privacy law as announced on July 6, 2023.

Even if your business is located outside of these states may still be required to comply with their privacy laws by including disclosures in your Privacy Policies and by providing ways to Opt-out of the sale of personal information, profiling, and targeted advertising.

Although there is no legal requirement at this time, it will be mandatory in the not too distant future.

Website Accessibility

1 in 4 people could be leaving your website today because your website is not accommodating people with disabilities. The term accessibility covers a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities. As you can imagine the international requirements for accessibility (WCAG 2.1) are very complicated for individual users to follow and this means a lot of websites are not compliant and this is a legal requirement, whether you are trading in the USA solely or in other countries.

Who has to be ADA compliant or have accessibility on their website?

  • Places of entertainment like theaters & concert halls
  • Restaurants & eateries
  • Small & medium businesses of all types
  • Large enterprises
  • Retail stores
  • Local government offices, employment agencies, & labor unions
